We are not aware of any local distributors of the Pet Porte Smart Flap in South Africa however that is not a problem as Microchip Cat Flaps Ltd deliver worldwide for just £35.

The manufacturer's warranty is valid worldwide. You have a choice of either a UK or EU power adaptor at present but you can of course source your own power supply that matches the voltage, amperage and polarity of the one supplied. Alternatively you can run the cat flap on a 9 volt battery.

Please check that your cat's microchips are compatible. They need to be 15 digit ISO type microchips. All work except for the temperature sensing chips (eg. Biotherm) and some new AVID chips.

If you are chipping your cats for the first time we recommend Bayer Tracer Advance or Identichip because Pet Porte are optimised for those chips.

If you order two or more of the chip cat flaps then you only pay one postage charge. It may be worth asking any of your neighbours if they wish to order at the same time.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by customers about the Pet Porte Smart Flap. Should there be a cover on the underside of the porch?

The simple answer is no. There is a plastic ring that keeps the sensor coil in place. Everything is water-proof and protected from the elements.

Your cat will not pull the wire down and we don't think spiders will make it their home. Although that is a common question too!

The manufacturer decided that the addition of a plastic cover for the underside of the porch was unnecessary. It would add to the cost of the cat flap and might reduce the sensitivity of the sensor coil.

The Pet Porte Smart Flap is the best microchip cat flap on the market because it's the original patented product (worlds first microchip sensing cat flap) and it has a protruding sensor porch that is positioned over the neck of your cat where the microchip is located. This ensures your cats can always get inside.

How do I programme in my 3 cats microchip numbers?

Simply hold the green button for 10 seconds to put the cat flap into programming mode, then put your cat under the outside sensor. the pet porte will beep three times to let you know your cat is programmed in, then you simply repeat the process for the other two cats.

You have 30 seconds to programme each cat in -otherwise you have to put it into programming mode again.

Can I replace a Pet Mate circular cat flap?

The Pet Mate 210 glass fitting cat flap fits a 223mm or 8 3/4" circular diameter hole. The frame of the Pet Porte Smart Flap is 232mm by 232mm which means the frame will completely cover the existing hole.

So you can simply remove your PetMate cat flap and replace it with the new Pet Porte Smart Flap which will keep those marauding neighbourhood cats out for good!

The Pet Porte bolts together on both sides and the bolts go through the existing hole so it will hold securely in place.

The Pet Porte Smart Flap is the world's first microchip sensing cat flap with patented RFID technology.

This will include both the white and brown versions of the microchip cat flap for both door/glass and wall installation. Also we will have both the UK and EU power adaptors to choose from. You can of course also run the cat flap on a 9 volt battery.

Does Pet Porte Smart Flap work with old 10 digit microchips?

Unfortunately the Pet Porte Smart Flap will not work with old 10 digit microchips at this time.

If your cat has an old style microchip that is made up of a mixture of numbers and letters you will need to have your cat re-microchipped with a new European standard 15 digit pet microchip ID tag for the Pet Porte Smart Flap to work.

The chip we recommend above all others in this instance is the Bayer Tracer Advance because it tends to have the best read-range.

The new chip will take over from the old one so it is not necessary (and not advisable) to remove the old chip.

The older chips do not have as good a read-range as the new chips so would be unsuitable for the purposes of unlocking the cat door from a distance of up to six inches.

If your current cat flap has a 210mm diameter (from edge to edge) circular hole then it can be replaced with the new Pet Porte Smart Flap.

What to do if you cat catches a bird or mouse

If you see your cat in the garden or outside somewhere with either a bird or a mouse in her mouth then normally you might panic!

With a regular cat flap your cat could run inside with the bird or mouse and it could escape into your house.

Recently by neighbour had two birds in her house that she thinks could have flown down her chimney. Regardless of how they got in (she has got a standard 4 way locking cat flap) the birds caused a lot of damage in her home and took a long time to get out.

There was bird droppings all over the house and down the windows as well as feathers and fluff on the carpets. The birds went through needless stress because they could not find their way out on their own.

To stop your cat bringing mice or birds in is really simple with the original Pet Porte microchip cat flap. We just noticed our cat Hilda outside with a bird in her mouth.

We knew that we can just quickly switch the cat flap off at the socket and she will not be able to get back in until we let her. So when she comes to the door we can check to see if she has got the bird in her mouth or not and if we want to let her in all we need to do is switch the cat flap on again.

How simple is that?

Pet Porte door sticking - what to do?

Some customers have contacted us saying that the door of their Pet Porte microchip cat flap was sticking or not closing properly. Thankfully this problem is easily rectified.

We found that in all cases where the door would not close properly the reason is that the cat flap has been over tightened during fitting.

So to stop the door sticking just loosen the screws so they are not over-tight and you should find it works perfectly.

When will the Smart Flap wall version be available?

At the moment we are only taking orders for the door/window version of the new Pet Porte Smart Flap. The reason for this is that the wall tunnels for the new Smart Flap are not currently available.

We expect that the wall tunnels will be available in late July or early August.

As soon as we receive confirmation that the wall tunnels are arriving in the UK then we will start to accept orders for the wall version of the Smart Flap.

Can it be programmed to pre-determined hours?

If you have got a street light outside or you are installing the cat flap in a passage at the side of your house you may not want to use the automatic light level sensing function because it might think it is daytime when it is really light.

The new Smart Flap has the option of being able to programme it by light level or by time of day. So you can programme it to unlock at 6am and lock at 11pm if you like regardless of whether it is light or dark outside.

This is another advantage of the new Smart Flap that we are now taking pre-orders for. The first will ship on around the 27th June when the first batch of stock arrives.

Cat with an existing 10 digit microchip

Some cat owners have got cats with old 10 digit microchip numbers that are not compatible with microchip reading cat flaps because they only read new standard 15 digit microchips - the best ones being Bayer Tracer and Identichip.

In this case it is possible that customers could sew a new 15 digit microchip into a collar. Because the new microchip has a stronger transmission range it will overtake the existing microchip.

Some vets do not recommend rechipping a cat therefore you should consult with your vet before considering have your cat rechipped. Some vets will come and chip your cat in your home and other specialised mobile pet chipping services operate in some areas.

We recommend that if you do have your cat rechipped you use a Bayer Tracer chip as in our tests that chip has the longest read range.

Can other cats who have been chipped get in?

Only the cats that you programme into your cat flap can get in. You don't have to know the microchip numbers either.

Just hold down the green button for 10 seconds until it beeps, then pass your cat under the porch sensor (like scanning an item at the supermarket!) the cat flap will then beep three times and your cat is programmed in.

Switch it off at the mains then on again to reset it and the cat flap will then lock and only unlock for your cats.

You can repeat the process as many times as you wish to programme all your cats in. The cat flap will remember up to 31 cats!

Another method is to put the cat flap into programming mode and then push your cat out through the cat flap (don't force him!) then it will beep three times to let you know your cat is programmed in. Then reset the cat flap (turn it off then on again) and tempt your cat back inside with their favorite treats!
